In the realm of sustainable development, the maritime industry faces significant challenges and unique opportunities, particularly concerning decarbonization and gender equality. The article “Decarbonization technology responsibility to gender equality in the shipping industry: a systematic literature review and new avenues ahead” explores this very connection, demonstrating how the adoption of green technologies not only facilitates carbon emission reduction but also promotes gender equality, a cornerstone of UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the 2030 Agenda. 

 

Conducted by four Italian researchers, the study analyzed 114 articles published between 1990 and 2022. This extensive review highlighted how green technologies not only contribute to creating a more sustainable maritime sector through low-carbon practices but also facilitate gender equality. Innovative technologies can indeed open up new job positions and career opportunities in fields previously dominated by a strong gender disparity, enabling a fairer distribution of roles and responsibilities. 

Technological innovation in the maritime sector extends beyond improving energy efficiency or reducing harmful emissions. It also encompasses the development of business models that integrate corporate social responsibility and long-term sustainability. These models place particular emphasis on gender equality, recognizing the critical role that women can and should play in promoting sustainable practices within the industry. 

The introduction of clean technologies and the transition to renewable energy require new skills and professional profiles. This change represents an opportunity to reduce historical gender inequality in the maritime sector by promoting the hiring and training of women in technical and leadership roles. Additionally, environmental policies supporting decarbonization can encourage companies to review their organizational structures and decision-making processes, fostering a more inclusive and gender-balanced environment. 

Despite the positive potential, the path to full integration of gender equality and decarbonization in the maritime industry is fraught with challenges. Resistance to change, inadequate regulations, and lack of financial incentives can hinder progress. However, companies choosing to adopt innovative and sustainable approaches position themselves as leaders in the global market, enhancing their competitiveness and reputation. 

Research demonstrates that decarbonization and gender equality are not only complementary but also mutually reinforcing goals. By actively promoting both, the maritime industry can not only address environmental pressures but also become a model of equity and inclusion. Investing in green technologies and inclusive policies is not just an ethical choice but a savvy business strategy that can steer the sector toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
